Plantar Fasciitis: How Do I Cure It?

Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a ligament supporting the arch of the foot.

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia is strained as a result of increased or over use, poor foot mechanics, or the aging process. Often those who are overweight are more at risk. As the ligament stretches beyond its normal length it causes the soft tissues of the plantar fascia to tear, usually at the point where attached to the heel bone. This results in pain, which is oven severe, normally on the inside of the heel.

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain and is the most common foot problem seen in medical practices. Between two and three million new cases of plantar fasciitis are diagnosed each year. It is common in several groups of people, including runners and other athletes, people who have jobs that involve walking or standing (especially if it is done on a hard surface), and in some cases it is seen in people who have put on weight — either by dietary indiscretion or pregnancy.

Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis

Most cases of plantar fasciitis can be treated with conservative methods. Only in the rarest of cases is surgery necessary. However, unless properly treated the condition can refuse to go away, resulting in chronic pain. Treatments such as a combination of night splints, rest and ice, orthotics, and stretching exercises have been repeatedly proven to be effective in treating plantar fasciitis. Without proper treatment, the healing process may take several months.
